Xinhui Maternity Hospital
Concept design for a maternity, women's and children's health hospital, shaped as a green hill on a cut hillside site.

The project is a concept design for a new maternity and child health hospital in Xinhui, Jiangmen, carried out by Design Trademark Ltd (Hong Kong), where Yuming Bai worked on secondment from dot Architects. The scheme was presented to the hospital in two concept design reviews in December 2012.

Brief and climate
The brief brings together a children’s health centre, a prenatal care centre and a women’s health centre around shared facilities, with offices and a postnatal care club house. A climate study of the humid subtropical setting led to an emphasis on natural ventilation from the south-east summer wind and shelter from the northern winter wind.

A building as a hill
Several massing options were tested on the site. The second review combined two of them: the building fills the gap where the hillside has been cut, and its terraced green roof rises to form a summit of its own. The site plan steps from one to eleven storeys.
